Getting Creative on Krog Street
When Liza’s mom told me she wanted something a little different for her senior portraits, I knew an urban session would be perfect for her. If you’re looking for unique senior pictures in Atlanta, this session is a perfect example of how choosing an unexpected location can create a gallery that feels completely personal. Rather than the traditional field or park setting, we headed into the city for colorful murals, graffiti, industrial textures and some of my favorite little pockets around Krog Street.
Liza is a senior at St. Francis High School, and she brought SO much personality to this session. She was completely natural in front of the camera and up for anything—which gave us the freedom to create senior pictures that feel fun, artistic and completely her.
An Urban Atlanta Senior Session
We started near Krog Street Market and made our way toward the Krog Street Tunnel and surrounding mural walls. One of my favorite things about shooting in this part of Atlanta is how quickly the scenery changes. Within a short walk, we can move from gritty industrial buildings to incredible color, interesting architecture and pockets of beautiful light.
Liza’s simple white top, wide-leg jeans and Converse were perfect against all of that color and texture. And those shoes deserved their own photo!
I especially loved playing with composition during this part of the session. Senior portraits don’t all have to be the traditional smiling-at-the-camera shot. Interesting light, reflections, negative space and unexpected angles can turn a senior gallery into something that feels much more personal.
Unique Senior Pictures in Atlanta That Don’t Look Like Everyone Else’s
We were shooting on a HOT Atlanta evening, but you would absolutely never know it from looking at Liza. She kept her cool the entire time—and somehow managed to look completely effortless while we walked all over the neighborhood.
One of the things I love most about senior photography is designing a session around the person I’m photographing. Not every senior wants a field at sunset. Some want color. Some want architecture. Some want something edgy, artistic or a little unexpected.
And sometimes they want both.
For Liza’s second look, she changed into this gorgeous blue dress and we headed back toward Krog Street. The dress completely changed the feel of the session while still working beautifully with the urban surroundings.
I LOVE this combination—the softness and movement of the dress against the lines, lights and architecture of the city.
And even with all the color we found, the black and whites like this one always manage to be favorites from the shoot.
